Offices & Factories

Within the current law i.e. the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 all places of work, offices and factories in particular need a fire risk assessment. Many offices are daytime only but there are 24 hour operations similar to many factories and warehouses/distribution centres etc.

All these types of premises need good fire safety management to ensure safety for all persons who work and visit these places. This will ensure their safety and also the longevity of the building keeping it safe from fire. This is turn supports the work force with employment and good fire safety management is a must for the insurance companies who look favourably on compliant premises.

The more the workforce is involved the better the workplace and safer from fire and possible devastation and the recovery from a total loss through fire. 70% of business do not survive after a fire and few simple steps beforehand will ensure the business continues in every avenue.

Hotels & Holiday Premises

Throughout the world you will regularly see hotels fires that have catastrophic outcomes, the loss of the building and worse. This is most relevant and important as people from all different countries visit and use the hotel for sleeping accommodation. The south West of England is a well-known must see and stay for many nationalities with many different languages, therefore it so important for the fire risk assessment to be in place.

This also includes the holiday cottage that is let out through different agencies that ensure basic requirements  for the owners to ensure warning of fire-detection systems and the ability to respond to the alarm and summon assistance when in strange and very different surroundings that normal.

The need to ensure safety here is paramount, this is completed via the assessment process but also definitive consultation with the owners/clients to ensure maximum usage of the property and good returns on their investments. They do save money through direct consultation  giving the most desirable solution to their needs for their particular building.

Schools & Colleges

Many schools are places used daily and with so many people in and out the wear and tear on a building shows in many ways, possible lack of maintenance on the passive fire safety measures and the management of the building with very restricting budgets.

It is difficult to ensure all that is needed, fire safety wise, is carried forward.

Through the assessment and consultation process time and effort is saved to prolong the usage of the building and thus making it safer for all to use at all times.

Many colleges are historic buildings and their use is common and here many complex and difficult fire safety measures and ideas are put to good use to preserve the heritage, but also the maximum use of what can be done to preserve and make safe the building for future generations.

Marine Vessels & Port Buildings

In my time traveling the world on ocean going oil tankers of all sizes it was always our biggest fear, a fire on a ship. When in port then assistance is close but on the ocean thousands of miles from land you are the only persons to save the ship/vessel. Fire safety on the water is so important and a few simple measures is all that is required to travel safely and comfortably.

Ocean going cruise ships have very definitive procedures and drills and they should always be taken seriously. However the small pleasure craft it is down to one or two maybe more persons who may or may not be able to deal with a fire situation. Many small craft have been destroyed because of simple mistakes by the owners, and to follow simple guidelines will not only save the craft but will definitely assist you to a safer outcome.

Fire safety should always be taken with the utmost seriousness whilst afloat as you cannot always summon assistance. The marinas and port buildings are different to most as in the above sections but the basic rules apply, risk assessment and simple training for the use of something different to bricks and mortar living.
