The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

The Order came into force in October 2006, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (commonly known as the RRO) places an emphasis towards risk reduction and fire prevention.

It requires employers, building occupiers and owners to identify and eliminate or control fire risks within their premises and to ensure is safe for everyone to use.

The Fire Safety Order applies to most places with very few exceptions, the main one being single private dwellings, i.e. your own home.

There is also a requirement that if you have any type of licence in force for your premises you must record your fire risk assessment. In particular, this will impact on responsible persons who own or operate any bars and restaurants that need a license under the Licensing Act 2003. It also includes any owners of houses in multiple occupation (HMO’s) that are covered under the Housing Act 2004.

Fire-Risk-Assessment

Where persons are employed to work, it is a requirement under the Fire Safety Order that a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is carried out by a nominated competent person. Where there are five or more employees, the findings of the fire risk assessment must be recorded in writing.

The log book contains fire safety advice as well as forms to record many aspects of your fire safety management, including:

• Fire exits

• Fire alarm tests

• Emergency lighting tests

• Fire extinguishers

• Fire evacuation drills and training

• Fire protective equipment etc.

Any fire safety log book demonstrating records of fire safety equipment and features should always be readily available for your Cornish business. In particular for audit by any Fire Safety Officer that is employed by your local Fire and Rescue Service.
